Gokukoku no Brynhildr, written and illustrated by Lynn Okamoto (the creator of Elfen Lied), is a dark blend of sci-fi mystery, supernatural drama, and tragedy.
The story follows Ryōta Murakami, a high school student who still can’t let go of his childhood friend Kuroneko, who died in an accident years ago while trying to prove that aliens exist. Haunted by guilt, Ryōta spends his free time searching the skies, hoping to find evidence that might make sense of her beliefs and her death.
One day, a new transfer student arrives: Neko Kuroha, a girl who looks exactly like Kuroneko. But she claims they’ve never met and before long, Ryōta learns the terrifying truth. Neko is a witch, one of several girls who escaped from a secret laboratory where they were experimented on and given deadly powers.
As Ryōta becomes entangled in their world, he risks everything to protect Neko and the other witches from the organization hunting them down. Each discovery brings him closer to the truth behind the experiments and to the painful question of whether Neko really is the friend he lost years ago.
