GS Mikami: Gokuraku Daisakusen! Movie Anime Review

If you’re a fan of 90s supernatural anime, Ghost Sweeper Mikami is one of those titles that instantly brings back the rental-store VHS nostalgia. The 1994 movie, Gokuraku Daisakusen!, takes everything fun about the TV series, its occult action, slapstick humor, and iconic heroine and scales it up into a full-length supernatural romp.

It’s quirky, chaotic, and wonderfully retro, offering exactly the kind of theatrical upgrade fans hoped for.

The film centers on Reiko Mikami, a stylish, sharp-tongued “Ghost Sweeper” who exorcises spirits for profit. She’s joined by:

Tadao Yokoshima: her perpetually unlucky (and hopelessly pervy) assistant

Okino: a cute and talented young medium

Their latest assignment involves a series of supernatural disturbances tied to a dangerous sorcerer aiming to resurrect ancient forces. Naturally, Mikami accepts the job partly out of duty, but mostly because the payout looks irresistible.

From there, things escalate into classic GS Mikami chaos: magical battles, bizarre spirits, and plenty of comedic disasters.

Bright colors, expressive character designs, exaggerated reactions, the movie delivers that unmistakable hand-drawn look that defined the era. It’s a nostalgic treat from start to finish.

Reiko is confident, competent, and hilariously money-obsessed, making her one of the most memorable supernatural leads of the decade. She carries the film with ease.

The movie maintains the franchise’s signature mix of occult showdowns and slapstick humor. Yokoshima’s misfortune and Mikami’s deadpan reactions remain a winning combo.

The shift to a movie format lets the animators go bigger and bolder. Expect flashier spells, larger-scale threats, and plenty of classic 90s supernatural spectacle.

Like many 90s anime films, some scenes move slowly while others jump ahead too fast. It’s charming in its own way, but noticeable.

The story is fun but not deep. It exists mainly to support the comedy and action, great for fans, but newcomers may want more substance.

His pervy antics are very 90s, which means some jokes may feel dated to modern viewers.

GS Mikami: Gokuraku Daisakusen! is exactly what a 90s anime movie should be: fun, flashy, and full of personality. It doesn’t aim for emotional depth or complex storytelling.

Whether you’re revisiting the franchise or discovering it fresh, it’s a lively occult adventure that delivers on nostalgia and charm.
