The iconic rom-com chaos of Urusei Yatsura is back, reimagined for a new generation. Episode 1 wastes no time throwing us into the madness, mixing slapstick humor, alien invasions, and awkward misunderstandings into a colorful debut that feels both nostalgic and brand-new.
Our introduction to the world of Urusei Yatsura begins with Ataru Moroboshi, an unrepentant flirt whose constant bad luck has made him infamous around town. When aliens known as the Oni arrive to invade Earth, humanity’s fate is somehow placed in Ataru’s hands.
The rules are simple: a game of tag. If Ataru catches the Oni princess, Earth is saved. If not game over.
Enter Lum, the radiant, tiger-striped alien who isn’t just fast, but has an electrifying personality (literally). Against all odds and thanks to his usual mix of luck and desperation, Ataru manages to win. Unfortunately for him, his careless words make Lum think he’s proposed. She accepts without hesitation… and decides to move in. Ataru’s already chaotic life just got a lot more complicated.
The slapstick, the misunderstandings, the lightning bolts, it all feels like classic Urusei Yatsura, but polished for 2022 with vibrant visuals and slick animation.
From their first meeting, their dynamic clicks. Ataru’s shameless antics crash headlong into Lum’s mix of sweetness and fury, setting the stage for one of anime’s most iconic odd couples.
The jokes land quickly, the energy never dips, and the episode embraces its absurd premise without hesitation.
David Production (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) gives the series a fresh, colorful style that makes every gag pop and every alien moment shine.
The comedy is very 80s at heart. While that’s part of the appeal, newcomers used to more modern rom-coms might find some gags dated.
Urusei Yatsura (2022) Episode 1 is a lively reintroduction to one of anime’s most beloved rom-coms. It doesn’t try to reinvent the formula, it leans into the absurd, embraces its retro roots, and lets Lum’s charm steal the show.
