Before My Hero Academia became one of the biggest names in shōnen anime, it got a little side adventure in the form of its very first OVA: Rescue! Rescue Training! (2016). Bundled with the manga, this bonus episode gives us extra time with Class 1-A, focusing on teamwork and creativity rather than high-stakes villain battles.
Class 1-A is sent to a training facility designed to simulate disaster zones. This time, it’s a collapsed underground mall scenario where they must locate and rescue survivors. Of course, nothing goes smoothly, hazards get in the way, and the students have to think fast to pull off their mission.
For Izuku Midoriya, it’s yet another chance to prove he can rise to the level of his peers while figuring out how to handle the power of One For All.
The focus here is on rescue work, which is refreshing compared to the usual action-heavy early episodes. It’s a good reminder that being a hero isn’t only about flashy fights.
The OVA gives multiple students a chance to shine. From Bakugo’s explosive force to Uraraka’s creative use of her quirk, the teamwork moments highlight how their powers complement one another.
Without villains or world-shaking stakes, this OVA keeps things breezy and enjoyable. It’s perfect if you want more Class 1-A moments without heavy drama.
The animation is crisp, the action is smooth, and the energy of MHA is all there.
Like most OVAs, this episode doesn’t affect the main storyline. Once it’s over, nothing really carries forward.
Rescue! Rescue Training! is exactly what it sounds like: a fun, bite-sized adventure with Class 1-A. It doesn’t add anything groundbreaking to the story, but it’s charming, easy to watch, and a nice reminder of why these characters clicked with fans in the first place.
